Microsoft Teams: How to Create Breakout Rooms

Create breakout rooms during a meeting

  1. Start or join your Teams meeting as the organizer.
  2. In the meeting toolbar, select Rooms.
  3. Choose the number of rooms you want to create.
  4. Choose how participants should be assigned:
    • Automatically: Teams distributes participants into rooms.
    • Manually: You choose who goes into each room.
    • Let people choose their rooms.
  5. Select Create rooms.
  6. Review the room assignments.
  7. Select Open rooms when you are ready to send participants into their rooms.

Manually assign participants

  1. Open Rooms or Breakout rooms.
  2. Select Assign participants.
  3. Choose the participants you want to place together.
  4. Select Assign and choose the room.
  5. Repeat until everyone is assigned.

Manage rooms during the meeting

While rooms are open, you can:

  • Join any breakout room.
  • Move participants between rooms.
  • Rename rooms.
  • Send an announcement to all rooms.
  • Close rooms to bring everyone back to the main meeting.

Create breakout rooms before a meeting

  1. Go to Calendar in Teams.
  2. Open the scheduled meeting.
  3. Select Breakout rooms.
  4. Choose the number of rooms.
  5. Assign participants automatically or manually.
  6. Save your changes.
