Note: Respondus only works on Windows and MacOS. Linux is not supported.
- To add LockDown Browser to your course, click on Quizzes from your course navbar.
- Next, click LockDown Browser.
- From the Dashboard tab, select the quiz or exam in your course that should require LockDown Browser.
- To make it required, select the drop-down arrow next to the quiz or exam and select Settings.
- Select Require Respondus Lockdown Browser for this exam.
- When you choose to require LockDown Browser, you will get prompted to configure it further. It is important to note that only the first two Advanced Settings options are saved in Brightspace while the last 4 options are saved in Respondus. As a result, when you import a quiz from another course you are the instructor for, you will only be able to import the first two options and additional options need to be added manually.
- It is not recommended to select the second option, "Lock students into the browser until exam is completed," unless they are taking the exam in person and not online. This option will prevent a student from exiting the browser until the quiz or exam is finished and if a student has to exit the browser, they will not receive full credit for the quiz or exam. If you leave the second option unselected, the student can exit the browser but they will be required to provide a reason why they exited the browser. Click Save + Close.
Opening an Application During a Quiz
- During a quiz that requires LockDown Browser, if a user attempts to open an application via a macro, they will receive a warning message. This message informs them that a subsequent attempt will result in a report to their instructor.
- A second attempt to open an application will trigger an automatic report to the instructor and terminate the quiz session.
- To identify users who ended their quiz sessions, click Quizzes from your course navbar, then click the LockDown Browser tab. Click the down arrow button and then choose Review Early Exits from the drop-down menu.
- This action will display a list of reasons for early quiz exits.

- Once installed, the student can click the Launch LockDown Browser button from the quiz or exam in Brightspace.
