Install ChatGPT in Microsoft Excel

Introduction

The official ChatGPT add-in from OpenAI brings ChatGPT directly into Excel through a side panel. It can help answer questions about data, create or explain formulas, summarize information, and update spreadsheets based on plain-language requests.

This guide covers how to install the app listed as ChatGPT in Excel desktop or Excel for the web on Windows and sign in with an AU ChatGPT Edu account.

Install ChatGPT for Excel for the Web (Windows)

1. Open Excel and open or create a workbook.
2. Click Home, then select Add-ins in the ribbon.

3. Click the More Add-ins button from the menu.

   

4. Type ChatGPT in the search field at the top of the Apps pane on the left. Find ChatGPT in the search results and click the tile for the app.
5. Verify that the publisher name is OpenAI, LLC and the app name is ChatGPT. Next click the Add button.
6. After installing the app, a side panel opens on the right to sign in with ChatGPT. The app can also be accessed from the ribbon.

Install ChatGPT for Excel Desktop (Windows)

1. Open Excel and open or create a workbook.

2. Click Home, then select Add-ins in the ribbon.

   

3. Click the More Add-ins button from the menu.

   

4. Type ChatGPT in the search field at the top of the Apps pane on the left. Find ChatGPT in the search results and click the tile for the app.
5. Verify that the publisher name is OpenAI, LLC and the app name is ChatGPT. Next click the Add button.

Sign in to ChatGPT in Excel

1. Once ChatGPT is installed in Excel, open the app from Excel by clicking the ChatGPT icon in the ribbon.

2. A side pane will open to the right with sign in options. Click the Continue with ChatGPT button.

   

3. Click the Allow button to open a new window.

   

4. A new window opens for the ChatGPT sign in page. Type your AU email address and click the Continue button.

   

5. Next, the window prompts you to sign in with Okta. Type your AU username and click Next.

   

6. Type your password and select Verify.
7. Authenticate with MFA to sign in next.

8. After authenticating, the window closes. From the right side panel in Excel, click I understand.

   

9. Within the side panel, you will be prompted to answer questions during initial setup. You can opt to skip the questions by clicking Skip or optionally answer them.

   

10. After completing the questions, ChatGPT becomes available to use from the right side pane.
