Lumi is an AI-powered content generation tool that integrates with assignments, discussions, and quizzes within your course. To access the generation feature, create activities through the Content section of your course navbar. Quiz questions must be generated within the Question Library, accessible by clicking Quizzes from the navbar.
Important Note: When using pseudo text such as ‘Lorem Ipsum’, Lumi may interpret and convert the content based on the perceived language origin. For example, it will convert ‘Lorem Ipsum,’ a Latin pseudo text, into Spanish.
Generating Assignments & Discussions
- Click Content from the course navbar, and access the unit where you want to generate the assignment or discussion, then select Create New.
- Choose either Assignment or Discussion. This guide demonstrates assignment generation, but the steps remain identical for discussions. After selecting your activity type, choose Generate Assignment Ideas or Generate Discussion Ideas based on your selection.
- Ensure your unit contains at least one of the following required document types: .doc, .docx, .odt, .ppt, .pps, .pptx, .odp, .xls, .xlsx, .rtf, .txt, or an HTML page. Without these file types, Lumi cannot generate content ideas.
- When selecting "Generate Ideas," specify between 3-5 ideas for Lumi to generate. You may choose to use all documents or HTML pages within the unit or select specific items for content generation. You also have the option to specify a Bloom's Taxonomy level, though this is not required for idea generation.
- Once ideas are generated, review the options and select your preferred idea by clicking Insert.
- You will be directed to the "New Assignment" page, where the generated idea appears in the HTML editor.
- Review all generated ideas carefully, as AI is not 100% accurate. Complete the assignment configuration, then save and close.
Generating Quiz Questions
- To generate quiz questions for an exam, navigate to Quizzes in your course navbar, then to the Question Library tab. Select the Generate Questions option.
- You will be directed to a “Generate Questions” page where you can choose to generate questions based on course content by selecting the Select Content Option or Custom Text from the dropdown menu under “Content Source.”
- Click the Select Content Option to open a menu displaying all your units. Navigate to the unit containing the required file types for question generation.
- Course content requires selection of a unit containing supported documents (.doc, .docx, .odt, .ppt, .pps, .pptx, .ppsx, .odp, .xls, .xlsx, .rtf, .txt) or HTML page activity. Custom text allows input of up to 8,000 characters as source material.
- Generate up to 10 questions from the following supported types: Multiple Choice, True or False, Written Response, Short Answer, or Multi-select. Note that other Brightspace question types are not supported by Lumi. You may edit the source text from your selected course content without affecting the original source material by selecting the Edit the Source Text option.
- After configuring the source, select Generate to initiate Lumi’s question creation process.
- Once questions are created, review each question for accuracy and save. Lumi requires this review step to continue. Click on individual questions to begin the review process.
- From the "Review Question" page, select Keep and Next after reviewing each question and continue through all generated items.
- After completing the review process, click Save to Section to add the questions to your Question Library.
- Once saved, add the generated questions to your quiz by selecting the Add Existing button and choosing Browse Question Library from the dropdown when creating a new quiz.
- After selecting "Browse Question Library," scroll to locate your generated questions, select them, and then click the Import button. In this example, a dedicated section in the Question Library was created titled "AI Generated Questions."
- Once questions are imported, complete the quiz configuration, then click Save and Close.
