Add a New Activity to a Course

  1. To add a new activity, such as homework, quizzes, etc., click Content in the navbar.
  2. From the content page, click Create New.
  3. Next, choose the type of item you would like to create. In this example, a homework assignment will be created by clicking Assignment.
  4. On the next page, add a title and make your preferred selections to configure the item (i.e. point total, name, availability, etc.).
    • Add a numerical value.
    • After adding a value, a drop-down menu will appear to the right of the points field. Ensure the drop-down menu is set to In Grade Book, or the item will not be counted in the final grade. Note that excluding this from the gradebook will not turn it into extra credit.
    • By default, newly created items are set to hidden. Toggle the visibility switch from hidden to visible.
    • The right menu allows you to configure the item further. The options in the menu change depending on the item type.
  5. Under the "Submission & Completion" header, note that there is an option called "Category".
  6. Creating a new assignment category will not create a Homework category in your gradebook. Instead, it is for students to quickly and conveniently access that set of items.
  7. After all selections are applied, click Save and Close.
  8. Click Grades in the navbar and then click Manage Grades. To add the item you created to a preferred category, click the arrow to the right of the item to be moved, and then click Edit from the drop-down menu.
  9. If the gradebook uses points
    • From the item settings, choose a category to store the grade item within.
  10. In the following pictured example, "Sample Homework" and "Test Assignment 2" were added to the "Homework" category and now the items display indented and underneath the "Homework" category.
  11. If the gradebook is weighted
    • For the item settings, choose a category to store the grade item within.
  12. When configuring the homework category, your next steps depend on your initial weight distribution choice.

    • If you selected manual weight distribution: Enter a specific number in the weight field.
    • If you selected point-based or even distribution: Enter the point value for your assignment.
  13. In the following image example, "Sample Homework" and "Test Assignment 2" were added to the "Homework" category and now the items display indented and underneath the "Homework" category. The weight distribution appears as well.
  14. You have now successfully added a new activity to your course.
