To add a new activity, such as homework, quizzes, etc., click Content in the navbar.
From the content page, click Create New.
Next, choose the type of item you would like to create. In this example, a homework assignment will be created by clicking Assignment.
On the next page, add a title and make your preferred selections to configure the item (i.e. point total, name, availability, etc.).
Add a value. Brightspace accepts any numerical value you may add to your activity.
After adding a value, a drop-down menu will appear to the right of the points field. Ensure the drop-down menu is set to "In Grade Book", or the item will not be counted in the final grade. Please note that excluding this from the gradebook will not turn it into extra credit.
By default, new items created are set to hidden. Toggle the visibility switch from hidden to visible.
The right-hand menu allows you to configure the item further. The options in the menu change depending on what type of item you are creating.
Under the "Submissions & Completion" header, note that there is an option called "Category".
Creating a new assignment category will not create a Homework category in your gradebook. Instead, it is for students to quickly and conveniently access that set of items.
After all selections are applied, click Save and Close.
Click Grades in the navbar and then click Manage Grades. To add the item you created to a preferred category, click the arrow to the right of the item to be moved and then click Edit from the drop-down menu.
If you have set up your gradebook to use points please follow steps 13-14. If however you set up your gradebook to use weighted grades please follow steps 15-17.
From the item settings, choose a category for your grade item to be stored in.

When setting up the homework category if you selected to split the weight of the assignment by points or to evenly distribute the weight then you will just need to add the amount of points you want your assignment. If you chose to manually add the weight you are required to add a number to the weight field.
